The Liebenstein Castle Ruin, a former hilltop castle, is situated on the southwestern slope of the Thuringian Forest above the town of Bad Liebenstein.

History+

The construction of Liebenstein Castle is dated to the period between 1360 and 1375. From 1386, the Knights of Stein settled here, establishing the Liebenstein line. The name "Lybinstein" first appeared in 1406. During the Peasants' War of 1525, the castle escaped destruction because Lord Lips von Stein seemingly submitted to the rebels. A fire in 1567, caused by the capture by the Imperial Execution Army, damaged parts of the complex. Hermann von Stein carried out repairs until 1599. After the extinction of the Liebenstein line of the Lords of Stein in 1673, all possessions fell to Ernst the Pious.
