Lietava Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Lietava Castle Ruin, an imposing hill castle in Central Slovakia, majestically overlooks the villages of Lietava and Lietavská Svinná-Babkov. This historical site, once playing a significant role in the region, is now a fascinating testament to bygone eras, attracting visitors with its well-preserved, yet threatened, substance.

History+

The origins of Lietava Castle likely date back to after 1241, when the Balassa family initiated its construction. Between 1300 and 1321, it was associated with the oligarch Matthew Csák. In the late 14th century, the castle became the property of King Sigismund, before hosting various noble families in the 15th century. In the 16th century, it came into the possession of the Thurzo family, whose most prominent member, Count George III. Thurzo, Palatine of Hungary, was the last significant owner. Following the death of Imre Thurzo in 1621 and subsequent inheritance disputes, the gradual decay of the complex began after 1641. The castle archive was moved to Orava Castle in 1760, and since then, Lietava has been an abandoned ruin.

Location+

The Lietava Castle Ruin is located in Slovakia, in the Žilinský kraj, a region in Stredné Slovensko (Central Slovakia). It is situated at an elevation of approximately 624 m above sea level.

On site+

Today, the Lietava Castle Ruin can be visited. Despite its status as a ruin, it is relatively well-preserved, but a civic association has been working since 2008 to conserve and renovate it to halt its further decay.
