Lindenfels Castle
Lindenfels Castle is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle in the west of the town of Lindenfels in the Bergstraße district in Hesse. It is the earliest mentioned castle in the inner Odenwald and was significant as a noble castle for centuries.
It rises above the village of Schlierbach and offers a wide view south into the Weschnitz valley with Fürth and Rimbach and the Tromm in the background.
The village of Schlierbach gave the castle its original name Schlierburg (mentioned between 1077 and 1088 in the Lorsch Chronicle as Slirburc). In 1123, the castle was first referred to as Lindenfels Castle. Count Berthold the Younger called himself "Count of Lindenfels". In the 12th and 13th centuries, the owners changed. These included the Staufer and Welfen families. In 1277, Count Palatine Ludwig II bought the castle. From the late 15th century, the importance of the castle declined. In 1728, empty coffers forced the Palatine administration to demolish the keep. In 1779, further parts of the castle were demolished. In 1802, its affiliation with the Palatinate ended when the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt took over the castle.
Layout+
The castle has a polygonal, almost circular curtain wall that has been altered several times over time. The wall consists of granite ashlar, with corners, door frames, bay windows and other parts partly made of smooth sandstone ashlar. Inside the core castle, only traces of the younger buildings remain. The stately round keep stood centrally freestanding in the courtyard. Its location is now indicated by a masonry wall. The core castle is surrounded by three Zwinger (outer baileys). The inner Zwinger encloses the curtain wall at a small distance. The two outer Zwinger run at a generous distance, with a partially integrated town wall. They date back to the 14th century.
