Lindenfels Castle

Its origins date back to between 1077 and 1088 when it was mentioned as "Slirburc" in the Lorsch Chronicle, named after the village of Schlierbach below. In 1123, the name "Burg Lindenfels" appeared for the first time, and Count Berthold d. J. subsequently adopted the title "Count of Lindenfels." In the 12th and 13th centuries, the castle saw changing ownership, including families like the Staufer and Welfs. In 1277, Count Palatine Ludwig II acquired the complex. From the late 15th century onwards, the castle gradually lost its significance. Financial constraints led to the demolition of the keep by the Palatine administration in 1728, and further parts of the castle were dismantled in 1779. In 1802, its affiliation with the Palatinate ended when the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt took over the castle.
