Loburg Castle

Between the 8th and 10th centuries, a Slavic rampart castle existed here on an artificially raised hill. This burgward, situated in the Slavic Gau Moroszani, was conquered by Henry I around 928/29 and first mentioned in a document in 965, when Otto I transferred it to the Moritzkloster. After the great Slavic uprising of 983, the complex temporarily fell into the hands of the rebels. In 1114, Wiprecht von Groitzsch was brought here. The first explicit mention as a castle occurred in 1292. In the 14th century, the Santersleben family, who called themselves burgraves of Loburg and served the Archdiocese of Magdeburg, likely erected the late medieval stone buildings still visible today. Frequent pledges characterized its history until the cathedral chapter repurchased the castle from the Mandelsloh family in 1609 and managed it as an administrative office. By 1611, the castle was already deemed uninhabitable.
