The Löwenburg castle ruin, also known as Lauenburg, stands above the village of Lauenberg in Lower Saxony. It was once a hunting castle for the Counts of Dassel.

History+

The origins of Löwenburg date back to the High Middle Ages, when it served as a hunting residence for the Counts of Dassel. The first written mention of the complex dates from 1388, when it was referred to as “daz slosz Lewenberg.” Its name, like many castles, derives from the Middle Low German word for “lion,” a popular heraldic animal at the time.
