Löwenburg Castle

The site is dominated by the ruins of Lauenburg or Löwenburg, which was the hunting castle of the Counts of Dassel in the High Middle Ages. The first documented mention dates back to 1388 and refers to the castle: "daz slosz Lewenberg". Like numerous other castles, the name can be traced back to the Middle Low German "löuwe, lauwe, lōwe, lēwe" = "lion" and thus to a popular heraldic animal. During the Hildesheim Diocesan Feud in 1519, Hildesheim troops stationed at Hunnesrück Castle attacked the Lauenburg. This is considered the cause of the castle's destruction visible today.
