The Löwenstein Castle Ruin, also known as Lewenstein, is a former hilltop castle above Niedermoschel. Although only remnants of the palas remain today, the site is closely linked to regional development and mining.

History+

The construction of Löwenstein Castle is dated to around 1180, presumably under Wolfram IV von Stein on behalf of his father Wolfram III. Local tradition connects the castle with the nearby silver mine of Niedermoschel, with the Lewenstein family said to have possessed the ability to detect metals. In 1275, the castle was handed over by Emmerich and Wolfram von Löwenstein to Count Heinrich von Veldenz as a fief.
