The Losenstein castle ruin stands on a dolomite rock approximately 60 meters high above the village of the same name in Upper Austria. It is one of the largest and oldest of its kind in the federal state.

History+

Around 1150, the Styrian Otakars erected Losenstein Castle, primarily for protection against military incursions into Styria. The first documented mention occurred in 1170. In 1252, the complex passed to Dietmar von Steyr through an exchange with King Ottokar II. Przemysl, whose descendants subsequently called themselves “von Losenstein”.
