The castle was probably built in the 13th century on behalf of the Peggauer family. Through inheritance, the fortress, which was enfeoffed to Göss Abbey, later fell to the Counts of Pfannberg, then to the Cillier, and finally to the Montforter. Servants of the counts, such as the Mordax, guarded the castle. In 1321, it was first mentioned in a document as "castrum Luginslant". In 1373, there is talk of the "Veste Luginslant".
In 1596 and again in 1767, the castle district of the Peggau lordship extended to the old fortress Luegg or the old castle. Even in 1621, only the old castle is mentioned. When exactly it was abandoned is not known.
