East of Seelbach in the Ortenau district is the castle ruin of Lützelhardt, a former rock castle. The complex, whose name derives from the Old High German word for “small forest,” once secured an important pass road into the Kinzig Valley.

History+

The origins of Lützelhardt Castle date back to the early 12th century, when it was presumably built by the Zähringers to secure the pass road. It was likely managed by a ministerial family of the Zähringers. Around 1235, the castle was probably destroyed by the Geroldseckers, who belonged to the episcopal party, during conflicts between the Staufer and the bishops of Strasbourg. Subsequently, the newly built Hohengeroldseck Castle took over the security of the pass road.
