Mechelgrün Castle

The origins of Mechelgrün Moated Castle date back to the 12th century, with its first documented mention in 1267. In the 14th century, the castle was expanded to resemble a palace. For a long period, until the mid-15th century, it was owned by the Rabe family, a noble lineage in the Vogtland. A member of this family, Johannes Rabe von Mechelgrün, acquired Wildstein Castle in 1298. In 1465, the complex was destroyed but rebuilt with four corner towers, and in 1475, a chapel was added to the eastern tower. After a fire in 1670, which reduced the castle to its foundations, a slightly altered reconstruction took place around 1675.
