Merburg Castle
The Merburg is a castle ruin in Kirrberg, a district of Homburg, on the eastern edge of the Saarpfalz district in Saarland. The 11th-century castle can be described as one of the oldest and smallest castles in Saarland.
The remains of the former tower castle are located on the Malafelsen, which rises only 12 meters from the valley of the Lambsbach and is 245 m above sea level.

The Merburg had an octagonal keep, whose wall thickness suggests that it was at least ten meters high. Together with a fortified house, it was surrounded by a 75-meter-long curtain wall.
According to tradition, the Merburg is said to have been built on the Malafelsen in Kirrberg during the Salian period between 1024 and 1080. In 1172, knights from Merburg are first mentioned as ministeriales.
The castle was excavated between 1975 and 1980 and thus handed over to historical preservation.
