Mollenburg Castle

Around the mid-13th century, the Lords of Werd-Capellen settled in the then modest castle. When the castle lords participated in the noble uprising of the Kuenringer against Duke Albrecht I, Mollenburg was destroyed but quickly rebuilt. Its first documented mention dates back to 1303. As early as 1307, the dominion passed to a Lord of Streitwiesen. In 1486, Kaspar von Roggendorf, who also owned Pöggstall, acquired the castle from the Ebersdorfer family and expanded it. In the 16th century, the former princely fief became private property. After the flight of the bankrupt Christoph Freiherr von Roggendorf, the castle was confiscated in 1546. The Geyer von Osterburg family then partially converted the complex into a Renaissance castle. After numerous changes of ownership, the dominion fell to Emperor Ferdinand I in 1839. A renovation in 1844 followed, but already in 1860, the administrator Johann Niedermayer had Mollenburg turned into a ruin for tax reasons, by having the roof truss removed and usable parts sold.
