Of the castle built in the 13th century by the Lords of Monsberg, a "Ulricus de Mundisberc" is mentioned in 1258. On April 21, 1379, the castle with all its accessories was sold by Count Konrad von Aichelberg to Hans vom Stein zu Klingenstein, and from 1405 to 1411 all Monsberg possessions went to Zwiefalten Monastery. In July 1495, the castles of Monsberg and Wartstein were destroyed. The castle was abandoned as a residence and fell into disrepair.
