Montfort Castle

Around 1240, Montfort Castle was built by the Counts of Veldenz to monitor an important military road. Eberhard von Lautern was appointed as a vassal. The Lautern family, who adopted the name "von Montfort" from 1247, owned the castle until 1432. In the 15th century, the residents of the Ganerbenburg Montfort occasionally used the complex as a base for raids. This led to its conquest and destruction in 1456 by the troops of Archbishop Diether of Mainz and Elector Friedrich I of the Palatinate. Although Simon Boos von Waldeck received permission to rebuild in 1480, and there are indications of a residential tower being rebuilt, Montfort remained a ruin for centuries. In 1969, the Bad Kreuznach district took over the ruin, securing and extensively renovating it.
