Neu-Montfort Castle

Between 1311 and 1319, the Counts of Montfort had Neu-Montfort Castle built. In 1363, they sold their dominion to the Habsburgs, who thus acquired their first possession in Vorarlberg. During the Appenzell War from 1405 to 1408, Neu-Montfort served as a strategic base for the Bund ob dem See, but unlike many other castles, it remained spared from destruction. The castle's decline began at the end of the 17th century, particularly after the death of the last castle administrator, Ulrich Koch, in 1693. Today, the ruin is owned by the municipality of Götzis, which had restoration work carried out on the curtain wall in the 1970s.
