Neu-Montfort Castle

Neu-Montfort Castle (or Neumontfort) is a medieval castle ruin near Götzis in Vorarlberg.

The landmark of Götzis was built on the northeastern spur of the Therenberg above the village between 1311 and 1319 by the Counts of Montfort. 50 years later, they sold their dominion to the Habsburgs, who thus acquired the first piece of Vorarlberg in 1363.

During the Appenzell War (1405–1408), the castle was occupied by the "Bund ob dem See" (League above the Lake) and used as a base. This makes Neu-Montfort one of the few castles not destroyed by the Appenzellers.

Neu-Montfort is a simply structured complex. The castle complex originally consisted only of the mighty, still five-story residential tower and the palas, which was built to the west but has since disappeared.

Towards the end of the 17th century, the decay began when the last castle administrator living here, Ulrich Koch, died in 1693. The castle ruin now belongs to the municipality of Götzis – the curtain wall was restored in 1970 and in the years 1974/75.
