Neu-Morungen Castle

Neu-Morungen Castle is a former castle complex in Morungen in the Mansfeld-Südharz district in Saxony-Anhalt. The castle was a small imperial ministerial castle. It has been a ruin since the 16th century. It is associated with the minnesinger Heinrich von Morungen.

The hilltop castle obviously originated as a replacement for Alt-Morungen Castle. Its construction seems to have coincided with the abandonment of the old castle. Like the old castle, it was the seat of an imperial castellan. From 1250, the Lords of Morungen existed as vassals of the Counts of Mansfeld. In 1266, the castle was first mentioned in a document. In 1290, a burgrave of Morungen is named. From the 13th century onwards, the Lordship of Morungen was in changing territorial possession. The following owners are documented:

• 1320 Thuringia,
• 1323 Honstein and Mansfeld,
• 1408 Mansfeld,
• 1486 Saxony,
• thereafter again Mansfeld,
• 1655 Eberstein.

However, the use of the castle seems to have ended as early as the 15th century. As early as 1533, it is described as "completely desolate".
