Neu-Morungen Castle
In Morungen, a district of Sangerhausen, the castle ruin of Neu-Morungen, a former hilltop castle, rises approximately 394 meters above sea level. This site in the Mansfeld-Südharz district of Saxony-Anhalt is associated with the minnesinger Heinrich von Morungen.
History+
Neu-Morungen Castle was built as a replacement for the older Alt-Morungen Castle and served as the seat of an imperial castellan. Its first documentary mention dates back to 1266, with a castellan of Morungen already being named in 1290. From the 13th century onwards, the lordship of Morungen was in the possession of various territorial lords, including Thuringia (1320), Honstein and Mansfeld (1323), later again Mansfeld (1408), Saxony (1486), once more Mansfeld, and finally Eberstein (1655). However, its use already ended in the 15th century, and by 1533 it was described as “completely desolate.”
