The castle ruin Neu-Windeck, also known as Lauf Castle or Laufer Schloss, is a hilltop castle situated on the Schlossberg near Lauf in the Ortenau district.

History+

Around the year 1300, Neu-Windeck Castle was constructed by the Lords of Windeck, following the family's division into two independent lines. The complex was first documented in 1371. A castle chapel, dedicated to the Three Magi, was mentioned in historical documents in 1377. The two lines of the Windeck family, often in conflict with each other, used the castle as a stronghold against Alt-Windeck during the Schlegler War (1394–1396). Hostilities only ceased in 1466 with the marriage of Berthold von Neu-Windeck to Anna von Alt-Windeck. In 1500, Sebastian von Windeck mortgaged a part of the castle to Margrave Christoph I of Baden.
