Neu-Wolfstein Castle

The exact period of the construction of Neu-Wolfstein Castle is not fully documented. It is presumed that it was built between 1275 and 1324 under Rudolf von Habsburg, possibly in connection with the founding of the town of Wolfstein and as part of its fortifications. The first documented mention occurred in 1324 as "Hus zu Wolvenstein". During the Bavarian War of Succession in 1503, the castle suffered severe damage. After demolition in 1609, it was rebuilt, only to be destroyed again by French troops in 1688. Another reconstruction followed, this time for use as a barracks for French soldiers. In 1713, the complex was partially destroyed by bombardment on Marshal Villar's orders and later used as a quarry by the Kingdom of Bavaria.
