Neublankenheim Castle

The castle ruin of Neublankenheim, a hilltop castle in the Eifel, sits on an elevation in the Kalkeifel region. Located in Rhineland-Palatinate, near the border with North Rhine-Westphalia, its origins are partly shrouded in mystery.
History+
The exact period of Neublankenheim Castle's construction is not definitively known, as early documents might also refer to Blankenheim Castle. A document from 1341 is considered the first confirmed mention. In it, Margrave Wilhelm I of Jülich transferred the castle as a hereditary fief to Gerhard V of Blankenheim. For a long time, the complex remained in the possession of the Lords of Blankenheim, often as a fief. In 1470, after inheritance disputes, the County of Blankenheim passed to Count Dietrich III of Manderscheid, while the castle itself went to the Lords of Mirbach. By 1521, Dietrich von Mirbach described the castle as “destroyed.” Reconstruction apparently did not occur due to its remote location and strategic insignificance.
