The remains of the Castle can be visited

The castle ruin Neudegg rises on a wooded hill in the western Pulkau Valley, near the village of Theras in the market town of Sigmundsherberg. This historic complex, whose origins are presumed to be in the 12th or 13th century, is today an impressive testament to medieval architecture in Lower Austria.

The first documentary mention of an “Ortolfus de Nonnekke” occurred in 1183. Around 1220, a “Chunradus de Niweneke” is named as owner. Later, around 1390, a “Cherssl der Schütze von Rugers” appeared, although a possible connection to Riegersburg remains unclear. A Niklas Newnekker made claims against Cherssl at that time. After another owner, Peter Laher, Neudegg was merely referred to as an “ödes Haus” (desolate house), indicating its gradual decline.
