On a spur of the Kleiner Schärtenkopf lies the castle ruin of Neuenstein, a former hilltop castle in the Ortenau district.

History+

The construction of Neuenstein Castle took place around the year 1322, initiated by the Counts of Freiburg. The complex passed into the possession of the Lords of Neuenstein before it was destroyed in 1609. There are also traditions that mention an older castle named Alt-Neuenstein, which may have served as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Neuenstein, first mentioned in 1123, and possibly located to the right of the Rench above Hubacker. A castle site for Alt-Neuenstein was mentioned in 1405.
