The Ruin can't be visited

Around 1170, the castle ruin Neuerburg, a hilltop castle, was constructed on a cliff above the Fockenbach in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is an example of Staufer castle architecture.

History+

The construction of Neuerburg took place around 1170, initiated by Ludwig II of Thuringia. In 1218, a noble family emerged, naming themselves after the castle and serving Countess Mechthild of Sayn. After her husband's death, the Countess handed over the castle to the Archdiocese of Cologne in 1250. From 1290, Neuerburg gave its name to a Cologne electorate office, whose administrative area corresponded to today's Waldbreitbach municipality.
