The Neufels castle ruin is perched on a broad spur above the Kupfer river on the edge of the hamlet of Neufels, which belongs to the town of Neuenstein in the Hohenlohe district. This former spur castle, whose origins date back to the late 13th century, was once the ancestral seat of a significant noble family and today bears witness to a turbulent history.

First mentioned in a document in 1287 as “Nuwenfels,” Neufels Castle served as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Neuenstein. Over time, through inheritance, parts of the complex passed to various noble families, leading to the signing of a castle peace treaty in 1361. Between 1369 and 1378, Mainz successively acquired parts of the castle from the co-heirs, some of whom were members of the Schleglerbund. A Württemberg campaign under Count Eberhard the Mild against Neufels failed in 1395.
