Neugutenstein Castle

The exact construction date of Neugutenstein Castle is not fully clarified, but it is presumed to have been built by the Lords of Gutenstein at the beginning of the 14th century. The castle was first documented in 1354, when it was a fief of Duke Albert of Austria and owned by Burkhard von Reischach. In 1377, Duke Leopold III of Austria pledged the complex to Ulrich von Stüben. By 1410, the castle was already referred to as a ruin when the Lords of Stüben acknowledged the redemption of the pledged property. The ruin changed hands several times in the following centuries, including the Counts of Sonneberg and the Imperial Hereditary Seneschals of Waldburg zu Scheer, before passing into the possession of Prince Karl Friedrich von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen in 1783.
