Neuhewen Castle

Neuhewen Castle, also known as Neuhöwen and Stettener Schlössle, is the ruin of a hilltop castle on the Neuhewen at 863.9 meters above sea level, north of the Stetten district of the city of Engen in the Konstanz district of Baden-Württemberg.
The castle was built in the middle of the 13th century by the Lords of Engen (Hewen) and came into Habsburg possession at the end of that century. In the 14th century, it was a pledged fief of the Counts of Hohenberg. From 1375 until the beginning of the 16th century, its owners were the Lords of Reischach. Destroyed in 1639 by Bavarian troops during the Thirty Years' War, the Lords of Fürstenberg acquired the ruin in 1661. In 1671, the Ebinger von der Burg family acquired it, and in 1751, the castle ruin once again became Fürstenberg property; it has remained so to this day.
The castle had a trapezoidal main castle, of which remnants of walls are still preserved. The keep is still preserved with a height of eleven meters and a wall thickness of three meters. An approximately 8 m wide section ditch separated the main castle from the shield-shaped, approximately 75 m long and 30 m wide outer bailey. This continued north of the main castle as a 10 m wide terrace. To the west of the main castle, the ruins of buildings up to three stories high, at least partially with cellars, lean against the curtain wall, some of which show remnants of window frames (Romanesque and Gothic windows).
Complex+
The highest castle complex in the Hegau has not yet been developed for tourism. Excursionists will find neither a signposted path to the castle complex nor a signposted parking lot. While a visit to the interior of the complex was still possible in the 80s, it is now blocked by barriers and NATO wire.
