Neusummerau Castle

Burgrest Neusummerau refers to a castle ruin on a hill east of the hamlet of Summerau on the road to Flunau in the municipality of Neukirch in the Bodenseekreis district in Baden-Württemberg.

The hilltop castle was presumably built in the second half of the 13th century by the Lords of Summerau as their ancestral seat and was later owned by the Counts of Montfort-Tettnang.

Of the former castle complex, only remnants of the curtain wall remain in the foundation. A remnant of a corner wall, still known at the time, has since been lost after an unexpectedly large-volume landslide of the gravelly embankment towards the Argen river, located not far to the south. The road there has since only been passable for pedestrians in a sporty manner and, as it represented the only access to Flunau, was temporarily replaced by a new construction or expansion of a path over a ridge towards the K7778, which encloses the castle hill to the north. Flunau itself is a small excursion destination situated in orchards and connected by a pedestrian suspension bridge over the Argen to the area of Achberg Castle, located further to the south-east.
