The Niederburg castle ruin, a medieval fortification, is on a hill in the Hunsrück region of Rhineland-Palatinate. Its location once made it an important stronghold for the Archbishops of Trier in their conflicts with the city of Oberwesel.

The exact construction date of Niederburg, built in the 12th or 13th century, can no longer be precisely determined today. It served the Archbishops of Trier as a fortified base for attacks, particularly during the Wesel Feud of 1390/1391, a conflict between Archbishop Werner von Falkenstein and Oberwesel, which saw the first use of firearms in the Rhineland. Between 1362 and 1388, Archbishop Kuno II von Falkenstein used Niederburg Castle as a residence and to oversee the construction of Maus Castle, which he completed during that period.
