The Niederhaus Castle Ruin, a Staufer-era hilltop castle ruin, stands at approximately 499 meters above sea level near Ederheim in the Donau-Ries district of Bavaria.

History+

The origins of Niederhaus Castle date back to the 12th century when it was built by the noble lords of Hürnheim as their ancestral seat. This family had originally come to the region from the Worms and Speyer area. Initially, the complex was named Hürnheim Castle, but was later renamed Niederhaus to distinguish it from the nearby Hochhaus Castle. In 1379, the castle was devastated by troops of the Swabian League of Cities but was quickly restored.
