Nippenburg Castle

The origins of Nippenburg probably date back to the 11th century, when it was built by a local noble family for military purposes. The castle was first documented in 1160. The complex was expanded several times, including a Zwinger in the 14th century and an outer bailey with a massive barn at the end of the 15th century. With the advent of new weapon technologies, the castle was abandoned in the 17th century. Stones from the castle were used for the construction of the nearby Nippenburg Castle, and the complex fell into disrepair. In the early 1980s, extensive restoration measures were carried out to preserve the ruin.
