Nürings Castle

As Nürings Castle, the remains of a hilltop castle at 500 m above sea level are known directly next to the south side of Falkenstein Castle in the Falkenstein district of Königstein im Taunus in the Hochtaunuskreis in Hesse.

The still preserved tower stump was attributed to a Salian-era tower castle. However, more recent investigations (Müller excavation 1997, Erdmann survey 2002) make it probable that the visible masonry dates to the period between the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 15th century, and thus to the time of the Falkensteiners.

The castle was built in the 11th century by the noble free lords of Nürings (or Norings). A century later, in 1171/72, the Nüringer family already died out. Later owners were the Lords of Bolanden. Philipp von Bolanden called himself after Falkenstein Castle on the Donnersberg from the 13th century onwards. This new Falkenstein line removed the remains of Nürings Castle and erected Neu-Falkenstein Castle in the same place; although this is only documented in 1364, it was probably started in the second half of the 13th century. Nürings Castle was secured in the east by a steep rocky slope and on the other side by ramparts and moats.
