Nussberg Castle

The history of the castle dates back to the 12th century, as a "Ruodeger de Nuzperch" already appears as a witness in a document in 1148. The Nussbergers were ministeriales of the Dukes of Carinthia. A "Chunradus de Nuzprech" appears at the end of the 12th century. He was also a ministeriale of the Carinthian Dukes, but at the same time a vassal of the convent of Göss, to which Nussberg belonged in the 13th century.

During this time, the castle was expanded and extended. Around 1300, the Nussbergers died out, and the castle subsequently fell into the possession of the Värber family, the then owners of Frauenstein. In 1487, during the war between King Frederick III and the Hungarian Corvinus, Nussberg was conquered by the Hungarians.

Only after weeks could the Hungarians be forced to capitulate. Agnes, the daughter of the last Värber, transferred the castle to her namesake daughter, the wife of Christoph Welzer von Eberstein. After the death of the childless Veit Welzer, the inheritance was divided. In 1588, Nussberg came to Welzer's sister, Anna Maria, wife of Ehrenreich von Trauttmansdorf. She sold Nussberg in 1636 to Adam von Gablhofen. In 1708, the castle, which had already become a ruin, was sold to Franz Andreas von Mayrhofen and united with the lordship of Kraig. In 1854, Nussberg was acquired by Countess Theresia von Göss. In the following period, ownership of the castle changed within the Goess family. Today, the ruin is privately owned and is being rebuilt.
