Ober-Falkenstein Castel

The origins of the castle date back to the 11th century, when a noble family from Kappel initiated its construction. A tragic event occurred nearby in 1030, when Duke Ernst of Swabia and Werner von Kyburg fell. In 1250, the Lords of Falkenstein acquired the neighboring Ramstein Castle. At the beginning of the 14th century, the family split into the lines Falkenstein auf Falkenstein and Falkenstein auf Ramstein. The Falkensteins exerted influence in the Middle Ages, including as abbots and canons. Between 1444 and 1449, Jakob and Konrad von Falkenstein sold the castle and large parts of their possessions to Count Ludwig of Württemberg.
