Obere Sachsenburg Castle

The origins of Obere Sachsenburg date back to the 7th and 8th centuries, as archaeological finds indicate a Franconian predecessor. The current castle was likely built in the second half of the 13th century under Count Siegfried von Anhalt, who had occupied the Palatinate of Saxony. Although the Treaty of Weißenfels in 1249 mentioned the demolition of Burg Saxinberg, it is unclear whether this actually occurred, as the castle was successfully defended against Adolf I of Nassau in 1287.
