The Ortenburg castle ruin in Baldramsdorf, west of Spittal an der Drau, was once the center of a Carinthian county. Its remains tell tales of power, destruction, and reconstruction.

History+

The origins of Ortenburg date back to the late 11th century, when Adalbert, the Freisinger Vicedom in Lurngau, began its construction. His son Otto called himself Count of Ortenburg from 1141, and the first documented mention of the castle dates to 1136. The Counts of Ortenburg were influential, owned extensive lands, and were known for their role as defenders of the Patriarchs against Venice. A severe earthquake in 1348 significantly damaged the castle. After the Ortenburg line died out in 1418, the county changed hands several times. With the construction of the castle in Spittal in 1527, Ortenburg subsequently served only as accommodation for servants.
