The medieval lowland castle ruin of Osten is situated near Schmarsow in the municipality of Kruckow, in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Once a customs castle on the navigable Tollense river.

History+

The construction of Osten Castle likely took place at the beginning of the 13th century. It is believed that the noble family von der Osten, who were established in the region around 1300, gave the castle its name. In 1303, Hynricus and Bernardus de Osten served as vassals of the Prince of Werle. Later, the castle came into the possession of the von Winterfeld(t) family, before being taken over by the Maltzahn family around 1330. Under the Maltzahn, the castle developed into one of the most influential Pomeranian strongholds and played a central role in politics and economy.
