Near Tannenberg, the castle ruin Paßklausen, a striking tower in the Saxon Ore Mountains, is the last remnant of a former moated castle complex. It likely served to protect an important trade route.

History+

The origins of the castle complex might be connected to an order by Emperor Barbarossa from 1162. At that time, the emperor secured the border routes across the Ore Mountains to Bohemia after taking possession of the border forest south of Freiberg. The name Paßklausenturm suggests a possible resting place or inn at this location.
