The Pernegg Castle Ruin sits on a steeply sloping ridge above the village of Pernegg an der Mur in Styria, Austria. It is an example of medieval architecture in the region.

History+

The origins of the Pernegg lordship, which was always considered a free property, date back a long way and are attributed to a freeman named Pero. The first documented mention occurred in 1143 by Ulrich von Pernegg. The Pernegg family served as ministerials to the Margraves of Styria and were known for their belligerence. In 1322, the castle was extensively expanded, and the estate was enlarged through the acquisition of neighboring properties. Wilhelm von Pernegg held the office of Styrian provincial captain in 1427 and was Duke Friedrich's chief steward.
