Philippsburg Castle
The Philippsburg castle ruin, also known as “das Rech” (the Roe Deer), is on a mountain spur above the Eifel community of Monreal in Rhineland-Palatinate. Together with the neighboring Löwenburg, it forms an ensemble of historical fortifications in the Elz Valley.
History+
The Philippsburg was built in the 13th century, with its first documented mention dating back to 1229. Count Hermann III of Virneburg is considered its builder, who erected the castle on the land of his brother Philipp. This circumstance led to a fraternal dispute, which was later settled when Philipp ceded his rights to the region. There are two theories regarding its origin: either it served as an outwork of the Löwenburg or it was Philipp's “response” to his brother's construction of the Löwenburg.
