Plesse Castle
The Plesse Castle Ruin, an impressive medieval complex, is perched on a mountain spur in the Göttingen Forest in Southern Lower Saxony. It stands as a striking testament to bygone eras and today offers visitors the opportunity to delve deep into history.
History+
The first documented mention of Plesse Castle dates back to 1015, when Bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn transferred it to his diocese. Around 1138, Hermann II of Winzenburg is referred to as Count of Plesse, and from 1150, the castle served as the ancestral seat of the noble lords of Plesse, who derived their name from the fortress. In 1192, a short-lived exchange occurred with Emperor Henry VI, in which Plesse was traded for Desenberg Castle, but this was reversed by 1195. A decisive turning point took place in 1447, when the lords of Plesse pledged their property to Landgrave Ludwig of Hesse as a fief, seeking protection amidst the turmoil of the era.
