The castle ruin of Počitelj is situated above the Neretva Valley in Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a strategic point in this river region, it played a role in controlling access to the sea.
History+
The origins of the fortress date back to 1383, when it was built under King Tvrtko I of Bosnia. Its task was to monitor and secure traffic and trade through the Neretva Valley towards the coast. It developed into a stronghold, especially during the Ottoman expansion in the region.

The castle ruin of Počitelj is located in the village of Počitelj in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, within the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It stands at an elevation of approximately 37 meters above sea level.
