Radzyn Chełmiński (Rheden) Castle
The castle ruin of Radzyń Chełmiński, once known as Rheden Castle, was a significant Teutonic Order castle in the Chełmno Land. Its remains, found today in the Polish village of Radzyń Chełmiński, bear witness to its former role as a convent seat and a symbol of the Teutonic Order in Prussia.
History+
As early as 1234, the Teutonic Order began constructing an initial fortification on this site. Around 1300, this was expanded into a stone castle. After the Battle of Tannenberg in 1410, the castle was captured by Polish-Lithuanian troops under Johann Sokol von Lamberg and Jan Žižka during their retreat. However, through the First Peace of Thorn in 1411, it returned to the possession of the Teutonic Order. The Order held the castle until 1454, when it was again conquered by the Poles and officially granted to them in the Second Peace of Thorn. During the Polish-Swedish War in 1628, the castle suffered severe damage from Swedish attacks. It then lay derelict until 1772, when Prussian authorities used some of its rooms. From 1800, the structure was gradually dismantled for building materials. Only in the second half of the 19th century were measures initiated for its preservation as a monument.
