Ramschwag Castle
The castle ruin Ramschwag, also known as Welsch-Ramschwag, is perched on a hill near Nenzing in Vorarlberg, Austria. Once a strategically important outpost, its remains today bear witness to a turbulent history and offer insight into medieval life in the region.
History+
The construction of Ramschwag Castle took place between 1270 and 1290 by the Lords of Ramschwag, a noble family from the canton of St. Gallen. The epithet “Welsch-Ramschwag” was coined to distinguish it from the family's Swiss ancestral castles, as the local population spoke Rhaeto-Romanic. The castle was not long in the possession of the Ramschwags and passed into the ownership of Count Rudolf III of Montfort-Feldkirch in 1352. In 1360, a conflict arose in which attackers under Count Albrecht III of Werdenberg-Heiligenberg-Bludenz advanced into the forecourt but were repelled. In the same year, the castle passed to the Habsburgs and became a member of the “Vorarlberger Eidgenossenschaft” in 1391. Ramschwag Castle met its end in the Appenzell War: on the night of September 28th to 29th, 1405, it was destroyed by Walgau farmers and has been a ruin ever since. Between 1997 and 2000, the complex underwent restoration.
