Randen Castle

The construction of Randenburg is dated to around 1175 and was likely commissioned by Diethelm von Krenkingen. It served as the ancestral seat of the knightly family of Randenburg, who originally functioned as ministerials of Reichenau Abbey, which held possessions in Schleitheim. Between 1298 and 1376, members of this family served as the reeve of Schaffhausen. The family, which split into various lines, lost its political significance around 1415 when they were deposed as Habsburg bailiffs of the city. In the 15th century, the lineage became impoverished and died out. The castle itself was still inhabited around 1400, but was subsequently abandoned and rapidly fell into disrepair.

The Randenburg ruin is located on a rock spur of the Schlossranden in Schleitheim, in the district of Schleitheim, Canton Schaffhausen, Switzerland. It lies at an elevation of approximately 893 m above sea level.

Today, the remains of the castle ruin can be visited. On the grounds of the former castle, the Schleitheimer Randenturm (Randen Tower of Schleitheim) also stands.
