Rauheneck Castle

The first documented mention of Rauheneck Castle dates back to around 1130, when Hartung von Ruhenekke was named as its owner. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the Rauhenecker family, later known as “Tursen,” shaped the region and established settlements at the foot of the castle. After the Tursen family died out in 1384, ownership passed to the Walseer family. A destruction occurred in 1477 by Serbian troops under King Matthias Corvinus, after which no further reconstruction took place. The destruction of Rauheneck Castle is attributed to the year 1529, when it was captured by the Turks.

Rauheneck Castle ruin is located at an altitude of approximately 336 m above sea level in the Baden region, Lower Austria, Austria. It sits on a foothill of the Lindkogel on the right bank of the Schwechat and played a strategic role in securing the medieval trade route through the Helenental.
