Rauhenstein Castle
The castle ruin Rauhenstein is located in the Helenental northeast of the Schwechat, in the municipal area of Baden bei Wien. It was probably built, like the neighboring castle ruin Rauheneck, in the 12th century by the knightly family of the Tursen. It was repeatedly inhabited by robber knights and often destroyed and rebuilt.
However, the roof tax from the 18th century is to blame for its final decay. At that time, many castles had their roofs removed, as this form of building tax was calculated based on the roof area of buildings. Preservation work on the ruin, which was positively received in the spirit of the spa operations, took place in 1881.
Since 1993, the so-called "Ruinenfestl" (Ruin Festival) has been celebrated at the Rauhenstein ruin from April 30th to May 1st (Walpurgis Night).
Furthermore, a troop of the Scouts and Girl Guides of the Baden group in the Guides&Scouts age group is named after the castle.
