Rauschenburg Castle
The Rauschenburg, also known as Rauschenberg Castle, is the medieval ruin of a hilltop castle at around 250 m above sea level, above the Ehrbach in the municipality of Mermuth in the Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis in Rhineland-Palatinate.
Of the former castle complex, the inner courtyard, the shield wall, and remains of the keep are still clearly visible.
The castle and its history are closely linked to the Eltz Feud. Just like the siege castle Trutzeltz, built for the purpose of conquering Eltz Castle due to the Eltz Feud, Rauschenberg Castle was also built by the Trier Elector Balduin in 1332 during the Eltz Feud. A predecessor building is already mentioned in 1285 as Rusberg and in 1332 as Ruszimburg. In 1456, the castle was destroyed during the Beilstein Feud.
