The Rechenberg Castle Ruin, also known as Schanze or Burgberg, is a high-altitude castle ruin situated on a mountain spur above the Freiberger Mulde. It is located in the eastern part of the municipality of Rechenberg-Bienenmühle.

History+

The castle's origins lie in an older wooden defensive structure, consisting of three parts and protected by ramparts and a ditch system. Its function was to guard a mountain pass. The castle was first documented in 1270, when Apitz de Rechenberg was mentioned in connection with it. Heinrich von Rechenberg also appeared as a witness in this document. In 1389, the Wettins acquired the entire Riesenburg lordship from the Hrabischitzers. From 1459, Rechenberg permanently remained with Saxony. The castle served as the ancestral seat of the von Rechenberg family.
