Rehberg Castle

In 1141, Otto I de Lengenpach is mentioned for the first time as a castle owner. His successors soon called themselves only after Rehberg.

When Otto V, cathedral provost of Regensburg, was slain in 1235, the lordship fell to the sovereign. From 1314, it belonged to Agnes of Hungary as a widow's residence. The Habsburgs pledged it several times in the 15th century, first to the Grabner family (1410), then to Ulrich von Eitzing (1451), and finally to Georg Mühlwanger. Emperor Frederick III redeemed the pledged property and had the castle administered by stewards. Emperor Maximilian I sold the lordship in 1501 to Hans von Sacher zu Weissenstein. From 1520 to 1650, it was owned by the Thonradl family.

During this time, the complex was not well maintained and soon fell into disrepair. Gregor Christoph Thonradl sold Rehberg in 1650 to his cousin Johann Ludwig Graf Kuefstein. He had the medieval castle converted into a representative, habitable complex. In 1688, David Ungnad von Weissenwolf bought the lordship. After him, the owners changed very quickly. These included Gotthart Heinrich Graf Salburg (1702), Johann Georg Emanuel Freiherr von Hohenegg (1715), and Vinzenz Edler von Salzgeber (1796), among others.

Finally, the castle fell victim to the notorious roof tax. Eugen Graf Falkenhayn sold the complex for its material value in 1822 to the municipality of Rehberg, which immediately began demolition work. In 1847, Georg Freiherr von Sina acquired the ruin. In 1884, it came to the Gutmann family, who ceded it to the city of Krems in 1966. The entire complex was archaeologically investigated between 1991 and 1995 by the Association for the Promotion of the Renewal of Krems an der Donau and then exemplarily renovated and secured.
