The castle ruin of Reichenau, also known as Schlossruine, is on a hill in the municipality of Reichenau im Mühlkreis in Upper Austria. It now serves as a backdrop for cultural events.

History+

The origins of Reichenau Castle date back to 1315, when Waither von Marschalich, a ministerialis of the Passau bishops, initiated its construction on the Pirchberg. As early as 1209, a Salmannus de Richenowe was mentioned as the owner of a predecessor complex in the valley. In 1359, Eberhard von Wallsee acquired the castle from Hans von Reichenstein, but in 1379, it reverted to the Lords of Marschalich. After the Marschalich family died out in 1575, the castle changed hands several times until it was acquired by Heinrich Wilhelm von Starhemberg around 1630. The Starhemberg family remains the owner to this day. After a fire in 1750, the castle was converted into a palace.
