Reichenstein Castle

The first documented mention of a Ulrich von Reichenstein dates back to 1230, with the construction of the medieval castle complex presumed to be between 1230 and 1300. The castle changed hands multiple times, including the Kapeller, Wallseer, and Liechtensteiner families. In 1567, Christoph Haym acquired the fortress and, over the next three years, transformed the medieval structure into a Renaissance castle. This reconstruction led to a rebellion by the subjects, who resisted the increased taxes and labor services. After Haym's death in 1571, the complex fell into disrepair from 1750 onwards. Since 1729, the castle has been owned by the Starhemberg family. Restoration of the ruin began in 1989, and it is now used by an association for cultural purposes.
